Touted as the best alternative to the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera is the fourth most popular cruise destination in the world. In fact, the tourist-friendly ports of the Mexican Riviera served as the back drop for the television show, The Love Boat, in the 1970’s.

Most cruise lines offer Mexican Riviera cruises sailing from the home ports of Los Angeles, San Francisco or San Diego. The one week cruises includes three ports of call in Mexico: Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

The Mexican Riviera coast features long stretches of beaches, rich culture, whale watching and regional cuisine of tortilla and guacamole. Major cruise lines including Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Norwegian and the Royal Caribbean offer one week Mexican Riviera itineraries. The Mexican Riviera cruise ship season is generally from September to May as the ships in the region head up north for the summer Alaska cruise season.

Puerto Vallarta

Previously a sleepy fishing village, the city was transformed after the filming of the movie Night of the Iguana featuring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Located a few blocks up from the sea, their pink villa is now a tourist attraction. The main attraction in Puerto Vallarta is the promenade along the beach with the blue Pacific Ocean on one side and a row of bars, restaurants, and tourist shops on the other. Further from the promenade, you will find the old world charm and cobble stone streets of this Mexican city.

Mazatlan

Mazatlan is the largest port on Mexico’s Pacific coast. A visit to Mazatlan should include the Plaza Republica and the Golden Zone. The Plaza Republica is the central square in the old town of the city. There you will find the cathedral and marketplace. The Golden Zone is a tourist area with numerous four and five star hotels with private beaches, shops and restaurants. Here, you can take in a show of the Papantla flyers performing a pre-Hispanic ritual dedicated to the Sun God.

Cabo San Lucas

Located on the southern most tip of Baja California, Cabo San Lucas or (Cabo for short) is quickly becoming a top tourist destination. Cabo is a great place for water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing and is legendary for marlin fishing. The city’s top attraction is El Arco (the arch), a rock formation more popularly know as “Land’s End”. The rock formation marks where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Cruise lines offer a number of different excursions including catamarans, pirate ships and glass-bottom boats to visit Land’s End.

Shopping in Mexico

Those looking for retail therapy in Mexico can often find good deals on leather goods, silver jewelry and other various handicrafts. Many stores have a cruise ship verified symbol indicating their goods are of a genuine quality.
