The music scene in San Cristóbal de las Casas is a wonderful mix of jazz, salsa, reggae, rock, and more. A great way to relax at the end of the day.
There is are thriving artistic and intellectual scenes in San Cristóbal due to the attraction of artists, academics, community activists, and travelers seeking interesting Maya cultures and pristine environments. This has culminated in a plethora of different music and dance venues to appeal to just about every taste, from jazz to techno, salsa to rock, banda to reggae, San Cristóbal will have you toe-tapping the entire time you are here. Latino’s (Madero 23) The salsa music here attracts all ages of folks. Expect to get swept up onto the dance floor in one of the best places for salsa dancing in town. If you are not an experienced salsa dancer, it is easy to find lessons at some of the local language schools or cultural centers just to learn the basic steps. Don’t worry though, the locals are always happy to help too. Blue (Rosas 2) This techno club features a live DJ Monday through Saturday and does not have a cover. The mix of music can range from hard house to remixed disco. Blue is a frequent stop for locals and tourists alike. Madre Tierra (Insurgentes) Featuring live music nearly every night, this club features bands that play mostly reggae and ska music, Madre Tierra attracts mostly travelers and local artists. It is always a surprise though and is worth popping in to give a listen to some music that is just plain unidentifiable. The dancing usually goes until early in the morning. Documentary and art house films are shown for a reasonable price during the afternoon as well. Da Da Club (Insurgentes) This jazz club features some of the best talent southern Mexico has to offer. Live music goes from 9:30 – 11 every night. Classic jazz, blues, and fusion jazz incorporating music traditions from the US, Latin America, and Europe can be heard on any given night. You can check the sign out front for a daily musically description. Revolucíon (Pedestrian walking street) Features live local bands playing a mix of reggae, rock, jazz, and Cuban son until about midnight. Attracts locals and tourists usually gearing up to move on to the next club. It is possible to sit upstairs for a quieter atmosphere. ZócaloThis town center may be featuring local marimba or mariachi bands; a stage could be set up for local musical super-stars or speakers; folks might be out practicing capoeira or fire breathing. It is always worth strolling threw here to see what is going on. This is merely a short list to get your exploration of the San Cristóbal de las Casas nightlife started.
