Cancun, once an elite vacation city for both Latin and North Americans is now recognised as the destination to have fun in the sun.

Cancun is a mega resort situated on the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. It shares the Peninsula with some of the finest examples of Mayan architecture and beautiful colonial cities, yet many of its gigantic hotels are examples of some of the worst architecture. Cancun has grown from a small fishing town to a party city where the fun never stops. Not everyone would see the appeal of this unique city but those who do come back year after year to party.

Where to Stay in Cancun?

Most people who book a vacation here will end up staying in the Zona Hotelera (hotel zone). This area is actually a long island with a lagoon on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other. The hotels here are enormous with nearly all the top world chains being represented. They range from low budget all inclusive 3 star accommodations to five star luxury golf and spa resorts. Booking a week's package does work out to be cheaper and from Europe and the US flights are often included. For visitors who are staying for less than a week it is probably cheaper to book through one of the many online booking agents. Out of season there are some great deals to be had.

The Night Life Around Punta Cancun

Most of the nightlife is located around the Punta Cancun area. The majority of party goers will have commenced their drinking at their accommodation as most of the all inclusive hotels have activity co-ordinators to organise events around the pool and bar. This keeps people spending their dollar in the hotel. If meals are not included in the hotel deal, people will venture out to dinner in one of the many theme restaurants. Examples of these types of restaurants are Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville and the Rainforest Cafe with its tropical rainforest theme. Some of these diners sadly offer animals as the entertainment. Monkeys and even dolphins are captive and all part of the dinner show .

All tanked up the revellers head for one of the big clubs situated around Punta Cancun. Hotels sell the tickets and offer transport to the clubs. Entrance fees vary from night to night but on average expect to pay $50 for an inclusive ticket. This ticket includes all beer, spirits, wine and shots. However, remember, it will probably not be the branded alcohol but a much cheaper product. The entrance price is also covering the entertainment laid on in the clubs and some are more of a bargain than others. Entertainment can range from live music, world famous DJ's playing, wet T shirt competitions and mud wrestling.

Coco Bongo and Daddy’O

Two of the main booze orientated clubs are frequently competing by advertising with planes along the beach and offering special entrance deals each night. Daddy’O attracts a very young crowd and although it does lay on entertainment it is more of a dance club, playing music such as hip-hop and techno. Coco Bongo is situated on the opposite side of the street to its rival and draws a mixed crowd because of its Vegas show time appeal. Here the show starts at 10.30 pm and does not stop till around 4am, ballet, acrobatics, cabaret and some of the all time greats of pop and rock and roll are impersonated against a backdrop of film footage.

If partying is top of the agenda for a vacation then Cancun is the place to be. Like Vegas and Ibiza, the party just keeps going. Take the trashy theme bars with some glossy shows and it will be hard not to join in the fun and fanfare in some of this continents most entertaining clubs.
